Lipstick under the Lens: Beauty Quality Control with EyeVision

In the beauty industry, the product has to look perfect before it reaches the customer. A lipstick with a damaged tip, an uneven surface, a wrong shape, visible contamination or a printing error on the package can quickly become a quality issue. For cosmetic brands, visual appearance is not a small detail — it is part of the product promise.

This is where automated machine vision becomes highly useful. With EyeVision, lipstick and cosmetic products can be inspected directly in the production process. A camera captures the product, and EyeVision checks whether the lipstick matches the defined quality criteria. The inspection can include the shape of the lipstick, the position and symmetry of the tip, surface defects, cracks, dents, particles, color deviations and other visible irregularities.

In a lipstick application, EyeVision can also go beyond the product itself. The same software can be used to inspect packaging, labels, caps, printed codes, barcodes, Data Matrix codes, batch numbers and expiry dates. This makes it possible to check both the cosmetic product and the final presentation before it leaves the line.

The advantage is simple: every product can be inspected with the same objective criteria. Manual inspection depends on the human eye, attention and time. EyeVision checks consistently and can detect small deviations that may be difficult to notice during fast production. Depending on the setup, 2D cameras, color cameras, 3D sensors or AI-based tools can be used to solve different inspection tasks.

For surface defects or shape variations, EyeVision can compare the lipstick with a reference model or trained quality standard. For more complex defects, AI and Deep Learning tools can help identify irregularities that are hard to define with fixed rules.

OCR and code reading tools can verify whether the printed information is present, readable and correct.

The setup is also practical for production teams. EyeVision is configured via a graphical drag-and-drop interface, so inspection programs can be created without classical programming. Parameters, tolerances and inspection steps can be adjusted when the product design, color, packaging or quality requirements change.

For cosmetics manufacturers, this means fewer unchecked defects, more stable quality control and better documentation of the inspection process. For lipstick production, EyeVision can help ensure that the product does not only perform well — it also looks exactly as it should.

Beauty products are judged by appearance first. With EyeVision, that appearance can be inspected automatically, reliably and directly on the line.
